French Santon Nativity

On a trip to France about 20 years ago to spend Christmas with my in-laws, I discovered the wonderful French tradition of the Santon Nativity sets. Each home set up a crèche, but they all varied. There were all the usual characters: Virgin Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus. The shepherd's and the sheep; along with the stable animals cows, donkeys, and the like. But what was amazing about these displays is that they also incorporated the local town's people, and that always varied by family.

Santons are, literally, “little saints.” Part of a typical French Nöel crèche (Christmas Nativity scene), santons come in work clothes to visit the Holy Family. They bring the Christ Child presents they have made or grown, hunted or sold. They perform or offer simple gestures of thoughtfulness. I found this utterly charming and so I started to collect them as I found them in little shops, even the local Supermarche (supermarket) had them.

With the exception of the Holy Family and kings, all the characters are delightfully attired in late 18th century or 19th century Provençal costumes. In my collection along with the Holy Family and some stable animals (we only have one of the Three Kings ~ the other 2 eluded me) are: the mayor (looking very official), his wife, a priest, a Basque drummer, a hunter, along with a few shepherds and angels. My poor woman bringing lavender has lost her head and one of the donkeys head is broken off...quelle dommage~!

For the last few years, for one reason or another, I have not set up the creche. But as I put it up this year, I found that two pieces were broken, so I decided to use 21st century technology and do a Google search to see if I could find a replacement. Was I amazed at the total history of the Santons and the true meaning of how they became so popular. Plus, the litte figurines, mine are the small ones made of clay which are about 2.75" tall, for which I paid a few French francs (yes, it was still the franc back then) for many years ago, are now more than I would ever think to spend.

Some of my Santons are marked by the artist, some are not...but it really doesn't matter to me. Many have chips and broken ears on the cows, because my son used to play with them when he was young. Best of all, they all have a sweet memory of Christmas spent in France and here with family and friends.

Joyeaux Nöel~!!

10,000 Boobicons by Friday

Feel Your Boobies Foundation is trying to hit 10,000 Boobicons by Friday.  I did mine...

So far over 6,000 Boobicons have been made! Just think of how many people have been reminded to feel their boobies.

Help them hit 10,000 Boobicons by Friday, just in time for National Feel Your Boobies Week.
http://www.boobicon.me

Make yours now, tell and friend....then, by Friday, change your Facebook Profile pic to your Boobicon to help us celebrate National FYB Week!

I discovered my own breast cancer by feeling a lump....this works~!! Thank goodness my doctor sent me in ASAP for a mammogram and then sonogram. When the results came back to check back in 6 months, thankfully my doctor was not satisfied and insisted that I get a second opinion from a surgeon. I had Stage 2 Breast Cancer...what would have happened if I had waited 6 months for a recheck. Thankfully I will never know and am CANCER FREE today 5 years later.

So check yourself on the front and then pat yourself on the back~!!

Pink in the NFL

Love all the pink in the NFL these days~!! Great tribute to all who have fought (including myself), those whoare currently fighting and those who we remember in our prayers who can no longer fight. This month is always a special part of my life and it brings a certain pride and confidence that we will win this fight one day and our daughters and granddaughters won't have to worry about breast cancer. The day will come..but we must keep fighting.

Met up with a dear friend and cancer survivor who just completed her own battle and saw in her eyes that she now knows that it changes you forever. It either empowers or destroys you....I choose to be empowered and to inspire others to do the same~!!

Fabulous Fall Side Trip

Rogers Gardens in Newport Beach is just one of my all time favorite places to visit and due to the distance, just don't get there often enough. Convinced my husband to make a stop on our way back from San Diego last weekend and it was totally worth it~! If you have not been there, it is worth the trip and plan on spending some time strolling their beautiful nursery and the amazing gift shops....yes, shops...there are at least 3. Unfortuneately, the main gift shop was mostly closed in preparation for Christmas decor, which is amazingly done there.

Here are a few of my favorite things:

To find something similar a little closer to home in Bakersfield, try Pay It Forward on 20th and H Streets downtown. Kim has a great touch with plants and her floral arrangements are to die for.

Genious of Memory

This quote of the day hits WAY too close to home on many days:

Whatever You Give a Woman...

This is my new mantra....love, love, love this and wish I knew who said or wrote it...but HAD to be a Woman~!

'Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit.'

Adult Baby Blankets

Minkee Blankets and Throws are not just for kids...these magnificent throws are so cozy to cuddle up with~!! Once I began making baby blankets and blankies out of the wonder fabric Minkee...it dawned on me rather quickly that "I" wanted one too~! So my first Adult Baby Blanket was born~!! As my friends saw and got the feel of the luxurious fabric...everyone wanted one. Even last year my husband even admitted he wanted one too~!!

Minkee comes in the most amazing range of colors and patterns, which can be done in so many awesome combinations ~ with or without fringe. Without fringe, they are totally machine washable and just tumble dry. With fringe, they need to be dry cleaned. But normally I only have to do it at the end of the cold season.

My favorite selling point is that I made and sent one with my son to college, when he came back so did the throw...still in great shape~!! I even asked him if he had used it much. He answered, "Oh yeah, mom, everyone who crashed on our couch used it." I proceeded to walk to the washing machine, drop it in with a bit of extra detergent, then through the dryer and it was a good as new. It even endured his frat house lifestyle...now that is saying something~!!

Counting

Love this quote, wish I knew who wrote it...we all should do this more~!!

Nine Eleven

The images today have brought back so many memories. I was having coffee and watching the Today show and could not believe my eyes. My husband and I huddled around the TV and watched in horror. Called my son and made sure he was OK, even though I knew he was on the West Coast...just had to make sure and talk to him.

The feeling that day is something that we as Americans should never forget and the images of all the loved ones of those who had lost their lives that day holding photos and hoping against hope is something that I think about to this day.

Like so many I paid my respects to the site where those magnificent towers once stood in NYC while visiting about two years later. It was such a moving experience and am so glad to have been able to go there and pay my respects.

It's always a bit chilling for me seeing them in an old movie or TV show and makes me think that is the way things should have been forever~!

Friends Don't Let Friends Shop Alone

Today is my buddy Stella's last day here on site with us...and I'm really gonna miss her. She is going on to a great new position and thankfully not too far away. But our lunchtime shopping trips have become legendary around here. Stella and I can get more done in an hour than anyone...well sometimes an hour and a half~!!

So yesterday we took her to lunch and had to give her one of the Girl Talk "friends don't let friends shop alone" platters with a couple of gals that look pretty much like us~!!

Gonna miss you girl~!! But we will always have the weekends~!!

PS Frosting Ink cupcakes were yummy too~!!

Quote for Today

Cherises a la Coquette

Sometimes a fabric just takes me back to a place and time or a great memory...and that is what this one did for me~!! Love, love, love the cherry print fabric and it totally reminds me of picking cherries on my cousins farm in France when I was a teenager with my sister, Kathie. We had gone to France for the summer with our father ~ the entire summer 10 weeks~!! There was a bit of homesickness, but once that past...so much fun~!! Made so many friends that summer we still are close to today...and wonderful memories of fun times, family, fetes...it's a summer neither of us will ever forget~!!
The oilcloth is so much a part of eating outside and the Toile handles...well how much more French can you get than Toile~!!
Bon journee~!!

Quote for today: "I try to take one day at a time...but sometimes several days attack me at once." ~Jennifer Yane

Had a fabulous weekend...but am tired today and wish I was taking a nap instead of sitting at my desk~!!

Sunday Lunch

I love Sunday lunch in the backyard with some good friends. Setting the table with fun summer linens, plates, silverware, wine glasses and with a nice bottle of wine or two...it is a totally wonderful experience. Eating off real dishes outside adds to the entire experience. And really, instead of throwing everything away...you run the dishwasher...big deal~!
One of the things that I like to add is an herb bouquet instead of doing flowers. This one is made from Basil and Chive that have gone to flower, with just a touch of Thyme. You can pick it from your own garden, if you have one, or just use what's left over from what you may have purchased. Honestly, it would be so inexpensive to just buy some herb bunches and make the bouquet. This one has been sitting on the patio for a week...still looks pretty good...even though my cell phone pic is a bit blurry...but then again sometimes so am I. The thyme is a bit dried...but it adds a bit of character. So easy, looks fabulous and smells wonderful too~!!
Try it & Enjoy~!!!

Sweet Dream Time

Got a great message from a good friend who is having her second child and I am doing a few things for her for her nursery and new little one, Elena. I did the bedding for her first child and she is going to use it again for her new little girl. She wanted a pillow with Elena's name on it and of course, I had to Coquette it up a bit.

Since babies can be messy, the outside is removable and can be easily washed. Of course, I could not just do a solid inside pillow...so multi colored polka dots did the trick on this one. Love it....and hope Elena does too.

This is how great new things end up in my line. A request for something, especially someone special, always make my mind start to whirl.

Ma Petite Coquette....how did I get here....

Well, it's a bit of a long story, so I will give you the condensed version. I started designing handbags and other items under the name Coquette Custom Handbags about 6 years ago. It was during a time in my life that I really needed a creative outlet and through the grace and support of many...the handbags were a huge success. Hopefully they brought alot of joy to people and helped them express their inter-creativity through me by allowing people to design their own bags. Coquette ran it's course, as things do and towards the end of my reign as Mme. Coquette (sounds a bit like I owned a brothel~!), I started designing diaper and stroller bags and developing Ma Petite Coquette, which was a line of baby bags, blankets and other accessories for little ones.

Recently, people have started to ask me for baby items blankets, wonderful blankies, and other of my little creations, which has inspired me to start making these items again and concentrate on Ma Petite Coquette. This has been a very inspiring and wonderful experience for me and also hopefully for the dozens of little ones and Mommies that I have made things for over the past couple of months.

So here we are in the age of blogs, facebook and twitter...which it seems unbelievable did not really exist or were in their infancy a few years ago when I was marketing Coquette and Ma Petite Coquette on-line. These new networking sites have also energized me to pick things up again. You can become a fan on my facebook page by following this link:

So stay tuned and I will be bringing you some of my new designs and reminding you of some old favorites too.....
